Company History – Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone
We were officially established as Gujarat Adani Port Limited on May 26, 1998, and initiated phased operations at Mundra Port in October 1998, with full commercial operations commencing in October 2001. Initially promoted by Adani Port Limited and Gujarat Port Infrastructure Development Company Limited, an entity under the Government of Gujarat, we entered into a Concession Agreement with the Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) and the Government of Gujarat on February 17, 2001. According to this agreement, we were granted the rights to develop and operate Mundra Port, situated on Navinal Island in the Kutch region, for a duration of 30 years.
Following a High Court of Gujarat order, Adani Port Limited was merged with us effective from April 1, 2003. Additionally, MSEZ and ACL were merged with us, taking effect from April 1, 2006.
Approval as a developer for a multi-product Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Mundra and the surrounding areas was granted by the Government of India on April 12, 2006. Notification from the Government of India regarding land covering 2,406.8 hectares (approximately 5,947 acres) was received on June 23, 2006. A subsequent notification on July 3, 2007, added an extra 251.4 hectares, bringing the total to 2,658.2 hectares (approximately 6,568 acres). Such notifications are issued once the developer takes possession of the land. As we continue to acquire more land in and around Mundra, we anticipate receiving additional notifications for the newly acquired areas.
To emphasize the importance of our Special Economic Zone (SEZ) status and the evolving nature of our business, we officially changed our name from Gujarat Adani Port Limited to Mundra Port and Special Economic Zone Limited on July 7, 2006.

COVID-19 Updates
The Adani Ports and Logistics has been working seamlessly to ensure that Indian homes are never devoid of essential goods despite the preventive lockdown to curb the spread of COVID-19. Click below to know more about the Adani Group’s pan-India COVID19 relief measures.
Fighting COVID with Kindness
Since the world became aware of the serious implications of the Coronavirus outbreak, various stakeholders from different sectors of society have been working to protect themselves from COVID-19.
Governments in India, both at the central and state levels, implemented unprecedented measures to safeguard the population of the most populous democracy from the pandemic. Amid this global humanitarian crisis, India’s private sector, including large corporations, SMEs, and small traders, has joined forces with the government in the battle against the Novel Coronavirus.
The Adani Group, which has been in solidarity with the Indian government in the fight against the pandemic from the beginning, intensified its efforts on an unprecedented scale with the onset of the second wave in India. The diversified infrastructure giant mobilized all available resources, including personnel, logistics, ports, and airports, to contribute to this nationwide fight against the virus.
Strengthening Crucial Oxygen Procurement and Supply Infrastructure
The Adani Group took proactive steps to secure vital supplies, particularly medical oxygen and transportable cryogenic containers, amidst a shortage faced by hospitals and COVID treatment facilities nationwide. The insufficient number of cryogenic tanks for transporting liquid oxygen has contributed to the alarming shortfall in oxygen supplies.
Leveraging its international connections, the Adani Group successfully procured numerous cryogenic tanks, each carrying substantial quantities of liquid oxygen, from leading manufacturers in countries such as Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Singapore, Taiwan, and Dubai. This effort was facilitated with the support of Indian diplomatic missions. The addition of these cryogenic tanks addresses the critical need for infrastructure to manage the country’s medical oxygen requirements.
While some of these large cryogenic tanks were transported through the Group’s Mundra Port in Gujarat, others were airlifted into the country with the assistance of the Indian Air Force, utilizing its largest transport aircraft for time-sensitive operations. The group is collaborating with the Indian Armed Forces to enhance oxygen infrastructure at military hospitals, establishing high throughput oxygen generator plants, and supplying hundreds of modular, ready-to-use oxygen concentrators to hospitals.
In the ongoing search for additional cryogenic tanks, those already imported are actively involved in transporting liquid oxygen continuously, adhering to distribution lists and government directives on its usage.
The organization’s rail and road logistics infrastructure played a crucial role in the efficient last-mile delivery of these life-saving supplies. Collaborations with global oxygen producers like Linde and Air Products enable the swift refilling and dispatch of liquid oxygen to various parts of India.
In addition to refilling and distributing thousands of medical oxygen cylinders daily in several states and districts, the Adani Group announced priority berthing and unloading for vessels carrying COVID-related cargo at Adani Ports. Furthermore, the group waived storage, handling, and vessel-related charges to expedite the process.
