In a devastating incident that has sent shockwaves through Tamil Nadu, at least 29 people lost their lives, and more than 60 were hospitalized after consuming illicit liquor in the Kallakurichi district. The disaster began to surface as individuals from various parts of Kallakurichi report symptoms of severe poisoning after consuming what is locally known as “packet arrack.” By Wednesday evening, the gravity of the situation became clear as hospitals began to fill with patients suffering from symptoms consistent with methanol poisoning Notably, a deadly adulterant often found in illicit liquor.
According to official reports, a laboratory analysis confirmed the presence of methanol in the consumed arrack, a substance that can cause severe health issues, including blindness, organ failure, and death. Methanol poisoning occurs when the body metabolizes methanol to formic acid and formaldehyde, which are highly toxic to human organs, especially the central nervous system and eyes.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed profound shock and sadness over the incident. In a series of posts on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Stalin conveyed his grief and assured the public that those responsible for this heinous act would face severe consequences. “I was shock and sadden to hear the news of the deaths of people who had consume adulterate liquor in Kallakurichi. Those involve in the crime have been arrest in this matter. Action has also been taken against the officials who fail to prevent it. Immediate action will be taken if the public informs about those involve in such crimes. Such crimes that ruin the society will be suppress with an iron fist,” he state.
In response to the tragedy, Chief Minister Stalin ordered an immediate probe by the Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID) to ensure a comprehensive investigation. Additionally, the Kallakurichi District Collector, Sravan Kumar Jatavath, was transfer, and the Superintendent of Police, Samay Singh Meena, was suspend. Nine other police personnel, including members of the prohibition wing, faced suspension for their failure to prevent the incident.

This reflects continuing lapses in preventing production and consumption of illicit liquor. This is a matter of serious concern,” he added.
The opposition AIADMK, led by Edappadi K Palaniswami, seized the moment to criticize the ruling DMK government. Palaniswami pointed to repeated instances of illicit liquor deaths since the DMK took office and demanded stringent action. “Deaths due to illicit arrack consumption is continuing ever since the DMK regime took over, and I have been raising the issue and seeking action in the state Assembly as well,” he asserted.

The decease include individuals like G Praveenkumar (26), D Suresh (40), K Sekar (59), and others whose names are yet to be confirm. Families are grappling with the sudden loss of their loved ones, while many more victims remain in critical condition, fighting for their lives.
A 49-year-old man, K Kannukutti, was arrest in connection with the production and distribution of the taint arrack. An analysis of the seized 200 liters of illicit liquor from him confirm the deadly presence of methanol. There is zero accountability in the DMK Govt & Ministers do not fear consequences for posing with illicit liquor sellers,” Annamalai stated.
