Introduction:
In the heart of the bustling city of Pune, a colossal figure stands tall, embodying the valor and grandeur of the Maratha Dynasty – the 13.5 feet tall statue of the legendary Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Statue. This monumental tribute is not just a symbol of historical pride but a testament to the unwavering dedication of the All India Shri Shivaji Memorial Society. From the intricate process of sculpting to the monumental task of transportation, the journey of this statue reflects a saga of pride, resilience, and the indomitable spirit of those who sought to immortalize the great Maratha warrior.
Molding the History:
The task of molding the statue was entrusted to the skilled hands of Nanasaheb Karmarkar. Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj’s confidence in Indian sculptors led to the initial assignment of the statue-making to Rao Bahadur Mhatre. However, owing to the slow progress of Mhatre, the entire responsibility, including the statue and historical plaques, was later reassigned to the promising sculptor Nanasaheb Karmarkar.
Karmarkar’s dedication and craftsmanship shone through as he completed the panels, including two large plaques depicting the Coronation Ceremony of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the battle of Wani-Dindori, ahead of the given deadline. The statue, measuring 13.5 ft in height, 13 ft in length, and 3.5 ft in width, was crafted with precision and passion.
Actualizing the Vision:
The actual casting of the statue took place on the historic night of June 01, 1928, at Mazgoan docks. A team of 175 workers poured molten bronze from two barrels containing 8 tons of liquid bronze each. Creating a single-piece casting – a first of its kind in India. The successful completion of the casting, witnessed by nearly 500 onlookers, marked a monumental achievement.
To enhance the statue’s magnificence, Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj arranged for his prized Arabian horse. ‘Shahnawaz’ to serve as a model for the horse depicted in the statue. A revolving platform was creat to provide better visuals of the horse from all angles. The meticulous planning and execution reflected the profound significance attached to this tribute.
An Iconic Journey:
The transportation of the statue posed a significant challenge due to its immense height and weight. With the statue standing at 13.5 feet and the packing adding another 1.5 feet, making it a total of 15 feet, it was impossible for the statue to pass through the tunnel at Khandala. The decision to transport it via the railway route required careful planning and adjustments by the railway authorities.
The specially designed wagon, one foot from the track, was created to allow the statue to pass through the 9.5-ft tall tunnel. With the supervision of 50 people in three wagons, the statue embarked on its historic journey from Mazgoan docks to Pune on June 10, 1928. The traffic on both sides of the route came to a standstill to ensure a smooth passage for this monumental symbol of Maratha glory.
The Ultimate Unveiling:
The statue reached Bhamburda (now Shivaji Nagar) on the night of June 10, 1928. Greeted by the resounding echoes of “Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj ki Jai!” The unveiling ceremony. On June 16, 1928, was presid over by the then Governor of Bombay Sir Leslie Wilson. This marked the beginning of the construction of the Memorial Hall, which stands today as the main building of the residential school and the society office.
